Trading Tasks: A Simple Theory of O¤shoring
نویسنده
چکیده
For centuries, most international trade involved an exchange of complete goods. But, with recent improvements in transportation and communications technology, it increasingly entails di¤erent countries adding value to global supply chains, or what might be called trade in tasks. We propose a theory of the global production process that focuses on tradable tasks and use it to study how falling costs of o¤shoring a¤ect factor prices in the source country. We identify a productivity e¤ect of task trade that bene ts the factor whose tasks are more easily moved o¤shore. In the light of this e¤ect, reductions in the cost of trading tasks can generate shared gains for all domestic factors, in contrast to the distributional conict that typically results from reductions in the cost of trading goods. O¤shoring and Unemployment1
In this paper, in order to study the impact of o¤shoring on sectoral and economywide rates of unemployment, we construct a two sector general equilibrium model in which labor is mobile across the two sectors, and unemployment is caused by search frictions. We nd that, contrary to general perception, wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases due to o¤shoring. This result can be underst...

This paper identi es critical modeling choices, as well as di¤erences in the driving forces behind o¤shoring, that may explain di¤erences in results. O¤shoring of industry-speci c tasks has wage and employment e¤ects that are vastly di¤erent from those identi ed in Grossman & Rossi-Hansberg (2006), depending on how the industries di¤er in their average and marginal skill-intensities, respective...
متن کاملO¤shoring, Unemployment, and Wages: The role of labor market institutions
It is shown that when wages are determined through collective bargaining, there is a non-monotonic relationship between the cost of o¤shoring and unemployment. Starting from a high cost of o¤shoring, a decrease in the cost of o¤shoring reduces unemployment rst and then increases it. The non-monotonicity of unemployment in the cost of o¤shoring does not obtain if wages are determined by individ...
متن کاملO¤shoring, Multinationals and Labor Market: A Review of the Empirical Literature
This paper reviews the existing empirical literature on the e¤ects of o¤shoring and foreign activities of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) on the labor markets of developed countries. Available results provide robust evidence in support of the fear that material o¤shoring worsens wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers; on the contrary, results are still too ambiguous to support c...
متن کاملSearch and O¤shoring in the Presence of Animal Spirits
In this paper, we introduce two sources of unemployment in a two-factor general equilibrium model: search frictions and fairness considerations. We nd that a binding fairwage constraint increases the unskilled unemployment rate and can at the same time lead to a higher unemployment rate for skilled workers, as compared to an equilibrium where fairness considerations are absent or non-binding. ...
